The world has a myriad of energy sources. Fossil-based fuels such as natural gas, oil, and coal–accounted for over 81 % of all energy consumed in the year 2018. Renewable energy sources like wind power, solar energy, biomass, and hydroelectricity are responsible for 14 percent. Nuclear energy accounts for another five percent. Different countries employ different energy sources to balance the environmental and economic demands.

Energy is present in nature in a number of forms, including sunlight as well as wind, waves oceans and more. When harnessed, and transformed into more efficient forms of energy, like heat or electricity, they are called primary sources. When the energy source is exhausted, they are non-renewable energy sources.

The environment is harmed due to a wide range of fossil fuels in addition to other non-renewable sources of energy. Oil mining, for instance, can destroy the forests of the earth. Hydraulic fracture (fracking) can cause earthquakes and pollution of water. Burning coal releases carbon dioxide, which contributes to global warming.

Fortunately some of the most promising sources of energy are renewable and sustainable. Hydropower, wind and solar for instance, are able to generate electricity without having to dig for new supplies.

Tidal and Wave Power are also renewable energy sources that are emerging. However, in order to be used on a massive scale these technologies need effective distribution networks. This requires the use of non-renewable energy sources to build these networks. These sources are not able to satisfy the majority of our energy needs. However, it’s important to be aware that prices for renewable energy equipment have decreased drastically over the last couple of years, and efficiency is growing quickly.
